Clean Energy, Brighter Future, Stronger Community
About
Located 60 km north of Loeriesfontein in the Northern Cape Province, the Loeriesfontein Wind Farms—comprising Loeriesfontein 2 and Khobab Wind Farm—each have a generation capacity of 140 MW, together delivering over one million megawatt-hours of clean, renewable energy to the national grid annually.
When constructed between 2016 and 2017, these sister projects represented the largest single expanse of wind turbines in the country. The projects achieved over two million construction man-hours without a single lost-time incident and reached commercial operations on schedule as part of the third round of the South African government’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP).
Spanning 6,653 hectares of agricultural land, the 122 wind turbine generators produce enough electricity to power over 240,000 average South African homes. Over their operational life, they are expected to avoid approximately 22 million tonnes of carbon emissions while using minimal water resources
Infinity Power South Africa operates the wind farms, with Siemens Wind Power contracted to provide maintenance services over a 20-year term.
Community
As members of the Loeriesfontein community, we are committed to contributing to sustainable community growth through financial and non-financial community development initiatives. We do this by giving back a percentage of our total revenue earned to the community through Socio-Economic Development (1.5%) and Enterprise Development (0.6%).
Our SED and ED programmes address a wide range of local needs, including healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, women’s empowerment, youth upliftment, academic support, early childhood development, and broader community building. We also support the growth and sustainability of local enterprises—particularly youth- and women-owned businesses, as well as SMMEs—through funding, training, and skills development.
Speaking at the official launch of the two wind farms, the Premier of the Northern Cape shared, “Through these investments made by the wind farms, the Province has secured a substantial share of the equity for local communities with benefits materialising over the project life. We are convinced that by working together, we can make a further impact, especially on job creation.”
